Flood Watch issued May 11 at 3:09PM AKDT until May 13 at 12:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK* WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam continues to be possible.* WHERE...The Yukon River near Circle* WHEN...Through Monday morning.* IMPACTS...Residents of Circle should be aware of a persistent icejam 12 miles from Circle. No overbank flooding has been reportedyet. However, as the ice jam breaks up it is likely that smalljams will form and release, leading to rapidly changing waterlevels with the potential for minor or moderate flooding at Circle.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...- The ice jam that formed 12 miles up stream from Circleremains in place. This ice jam remains firmly entrenched,however the ice is showing signs of rot and weakening. Theflood threat continues to diminish due to some of the builtup water passing the jam location. This jam is expected tostay in place for the next few days.Also, downstream of Circle small sloughs and streams areclearing of ice, and the main channel of the Yukon isbeginning to break up in place. This further reduces theflood threat for areas downstream of Circle at least as faras Beaver.As of 2pm today, 5/10, the Yukon River at Fort Yukon wasrunning swiftly against the bank immediately beside thecommunity of Fort Yukon. There may be some concern for bankerosion and minor damage. Be cautious when walking near theriver bank in this area.Even with a reduced flood threat, people living along theYukon River should remain vigilant until the ice jam threatpasses.As of today, 5/10, River Watch flights for the upper Yukonhave been demobilized. The watch will remain active throughMonday at noon.
