Flood Watch issued May 21 at 6:50PM AKDT until May 29 at 2:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK* WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt is possible.* WHERE...The Porcupine River at Ft Yukon, including the city ofFort Yukon.* WHEN...From Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday, May 29.* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers,sloughs and other low-lying and flood-prone locations near FortYukon. High water will begin move into low lying areas on the eastside of Fort Yukon from the middle to the end of week, withpossible flooding in Fort Yukon developing over the weekend. Thiswill be a slow-onset flood, with the water slow to recede as well.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...- Breakup is underway on the Porcupine River east of the borderwith high water levels due to snowmelt from a much wetterthan average winter. The Porcupine River below Old Crow(Canada) crested at 53.56 ft on May 19, while the PorcupineRiver gage closer to the US border had a record crest of53.57 ft on May 19. This high water will likely reach FortYukon by midweek, at which point the Porcupine may cause theSucker River to back up into low-lying areas on the east sideof town, then spread through the swales westward. Based onhistoric norms, if flooding occurs, expect floodwaters toslowly peak on the weekend, then slowly recede next week.There is potential for this event to be very similar toflooding of last year; however water levels on the YukonRiver are not nearly as high as last year which couldmitigate the situation.- Http://www.weather.gov/aprfc- Please stay tuned to NOAA weather radio or your favorite localweather news source for updates on this situation.- If you live in low lying areas in Fort Yukon stay alert and beprepared to take action.You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible FloodWarnings.
