Coastal Flood Advisory issued September 20 at 5:08PM EDT until September 21 at 2:00AM EDT by NWS Upton NY* WHAT...For the High Rip Current Risk, dangerous rip currents.For the Coastal Flood Advisory, up to one half foot ofinundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areasnear the waterfront and shoreline. For the Coastal FloodWarning, one to two feet of inundation above ground levelexpected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline.* WHERE...Southern Queens and Southern Nassau Counties.* WHEN...For the High Rip Current Risk, through Saturdayevening. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, from 8 PM thisevening to 2 AM EDT Saturday. For the Coastal Flood Warning,from 10 AM to 3 PM EDT Saturday.* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Greatest impacts will be during the hightide cycle Saturday late morning into early afternoon. Widespreadflooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline,including roads, parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesseswith basements near the waterfront. Numerous road closures are likely,and vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likelybecome flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfrontalong tidal rivers and bays.* RIP CURRENT IMPACTS...Life-threatening rip currents are likelyfor all people entering the surf zone. Anyone visiting thebeaches should stay out of the surf. Rip currents can sweepeven the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Additional rounds of minor coastal flooding aroundthe times high tide can be expected into at least Sunday.Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Iftravel is required, do not drive around barricades or throughwater of unknown depth.If you enter the surf zone, always have a flotation device withyou and swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relaxand float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim ina direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, facethe shore and yell or wave for help.
